CloseBroken by love, a man travels alone through a wintry landscape. With frozen tears, he faces the icy wind, looking for the happiness of bygone days, looking for himself, looking for a way out of his despair.
No other composer has set the existential experience of the outsider to music as poignantly as Franz Schubert in his Winterreise, the romantic song cycle par excellence. Director Rafael R. Villalobos, countertenor Xavier Sabata and pianist Francisco Poyato rise to the challenge of bringing these twenty-four seemingly antitheatrical but intensely dramatic lieder to the stage. With a touch of Beckettian alienation and only a few props – two theatre seats, some dried flowers, a bottle – they build a chronicle that touches you to the core while reflecting on the great taboos of our modern society: loneliness and mental health.
