Benvenuto Cellini
Hector Berlioz
28.1 › 17.2.2026

Rome, 1532. Pope Clement VII has tasked the sculptor Benvenuto Cellini with creating a bronze statue of Perseus before the end of carnival. Seeking fame and fortune, the latter accepts the commission, even though his workshop is short on both time and metal. On top of that, Cellini is head over heels in love with Teresa, the daughter of the Pope’s treasurer, Balducci, who for his part is intent on marrying his daughter to Fieramosca, Cellini’s rival in love and art... The life of the famous Renaissance sculptor inspired this colourful opera by Berlioz, which is being performed for the first time at La Monnaie in an exuberant production.

When Idomeneo washes up on a beach in Crete and lays eyes on his own child… With Idomeneo, the 25-year-old Mozart made his major breakthrough as an opera composer, diving into the labyrinthine head of a loving father, where memories ebb and flow, as if from the depths of the sea.

Hoping to protect her from the god of the sea, her sisters send her to live with the priestesses of Athena’s temple …  This World premiere will explore the human dimension of one of Greek mythology’s most (in)famous figures.
