... in which loneliness takes hold of Elizabeth’s heart and it becomes increasingly clear that her situation is hopeless. Although she decides to punish her favourite Robert Devereux by sending him to the scaffold for treason, the young man’s death is a fatal blow. As despair and madness gradually take hold of the Queen, the stage empties around her and the game will soon be up.
