28.1 › 17.2.2026 • La Monnaie
Rome, 1532. Pope Clement VII has tasked the sculptor Benvenuto Cellini with creating a bronze statue of Perseus before the end of carnival. Seeking fame and fortune, he accepts the commission, even though his workshop is short on both time and metal. On top of that, Cellini is head over heels in love with Teresa, the daughter of the Pope’s treasurer, who would much prefer to see her marry Cellini’s great rival… Berlioz’ first opera finally receives its Brussels premiere, in a production that is worthy of the most flamboyant carnival celebrations! Speaking of Roman carnival: on 31 January, we invite you to come to the performance dressed up as the most exuberant version of yourself and join us for one big festive night.

A song from the depths of the ocean reaches the ears of three sisters. Hoping to protect her from the god of the sea, her sisters send her to live with the priestesses of Athena’s temple. One day, while Medusa is watching over the sacred flame of the goddess alone, Poseidon emerges from the waves and rapes the young woman, thus defiling the temple. To punish her for this desecration, Athena turns Medusa into a monstrous creature: her hair becomes a nest of snakes and her gaze turns anyone who looks at her to stone. This terrifying power arouses the lust of heroes, who pursue her in her exile …
