In Memento Mori, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui ponders what remains of us after we die, what endures after the passing of a loved one. The choreographer draws his inspiration from complex spiral-shaped figures that translate the vertiginous appeal of this thought. He also blends different genres, pairing classical ballet and tango against a soundscape created by pop artist Woodkid that is at once melancholy and powerful – two qualifiers that apply to this vanitas show. Memento Mori will be followed by Faun, a commission to mark the centenary of the Ballets Russes, in which Cherkaoui revisits Nijinsky’s famous choreography L’Après-midi d’un faune.

This production is part of Troika Dance, our joint dance programme with KVS and the Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles.
