THE DANCE OF WIND AND RAIN: AN EPHEMERAL BEAUTY
‘Yuya and Matsukaze are like a bowl of rice,’ as the Japanese saying goes, which suggests that you are no more likely to tire of these two small masterpieces of Noh theatre than you are of eating rice. Matsukaze was Toshio Hosokawa’s third opera, and its very first performance was given at La Monnaie in 2011. In a dreamlike setting, a monk meets the souls of Matsukaze and Murasame, two sisters who were both in love with an exiled nobleman and who, years after their deaths, are still wandering around in the place where they loved, near a pine tree on the beach. The intimist approach that is so typical of Noh theatre sets the tone of this work, performed by just four characters and a small chorus, accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Sasha Waltz has created an enthralling performance that organically fuses music, theatre, and dance, and Barbara Hannigan and Charlotte Hellekant are both brilliant as singers and dancers.
