Giuseppe Verdi
Journey to the end of Verdi’s darkest night of opera
‘This tragedy is one of mankind’s greatest creations!’ Shakespeare’s Macbeth stimulated Verdi’s musical development towards music theatre with solid dramaturgical foundations: as a result of a new synthesis of drama and music and a complex and meticulous portrayal of the main characters, dramatic verity won out over the traditional requirements of bel canto. The young British-French director Olivier Fredj conceives this work as one long nightmare full of raging passions, terror, and lust for power. The boundaries between reality and fantasy are blurred; doubt and fear lead to the monstrous darkness in each individual’s heart... The mysterious strangeness surrounding Macbeth is deepened by Jean Lecointre’s digital collage, which forms the basis for the stage design. Conductor Paolo Carignani, a specialist in the Italian repertoire, will spotlight Verdi’s dark side in a production that signals his debut at La Monnaie. Macbeth as a surrealist nightmare.
