LA MONNAIE / DE MUNT
War affects everyone. Together with pianist Eric Schneider, soprano Anna Prohaska gives voice to those who leave and those who stay behind, those who flee and those who die. Intimate lieder by Franz Schubert and Hugo Wolf are interwoven with the trenchant modernism of composers such as Hanns Eisler and Charles Ives: as a born storyteller, Prohaska forges their soldier tales into a many-voiced whole.
Performed in five languages, the programme is closely connected to the musical and thematic world of Wozzeck, staged earlier this season, and poses fundamental questions about what war does to us, as a society and as human beings. These are questions that in today’s world unfortunately remain topical.
