Wozzeck, autour d'un opéra
Screening at the Cinematek

Presentation

A behind-the-scenes documentary of La Monnaie’s Wozzeck production from 1981

As part of the Cinematek retrospective on the work of  Gérard Corbiau, La Monnaie is bringing opera to the big screen with the Belgian filmmaker’s documentary on the 1981 production of Wozzeck – an opera that is returning to the Brussels stage this fall in a new production.

The film follows the month of preparation leading up to the premiere, offering a unique insight into the rehearsals and the work of the performers – including Franz Grundheber in the title role and Anja Silja as Marie. The camera also captures the collaboration between director Hans Neugebauer and the young conductor Sylvain Cambreling, then at the start of his tenure as Music direcctor at La Monnaie. The screening of this documentary will be followed by a discussion with Gérard Corbiau himself.

"Our film is, above all, a record of the creative process, in which the filmmakers strive to achieve three objectives: firstly, to help viewers understand the tragdy of Wozzeck; to this end, we have followed the production from start to finish, from rehearsals to performances; secondly, to contrast the opera with the world of today by asking the question: is it merely a relic of the past, or does it still resonate in our own time; and finally, to interview the then director of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Gérard Mortier, about his vision." — Gérard Corbiau
