Presentation

Quartett is based on a text of the same name by the German author Heiner Müller, who found inspiration in the 1782 classic Les Liaisons dangereuses, by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Müller’s work opens with the words: ‘A salon before the French Revolution / a bunker following World War Three.’ A man and a woman pursue each other, while switching identities, as the outside world is on the verge of collapse (or has collapsed already). Quartett is a 1999 collaboration between two members of the Rosas dance company (Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Cynthia Loemij) and two members of tg STAN (Jolente De Keersmaeker and Frank Vercruyssen). Frank Vercruyssen and Cynthia Loemij share the stage in a male-female confrontation that deploys both verbal ferocity and the menacing power of gesture. ‘Let’s rub our hides against each other. Ah, the slavery of bodies. The misery of being alive and not being a god. To have a consciousness and have no power over matter.’ (Heiner Müller, Quartett)
