Presentation

‘The era in which we live is one of finely wrought segregation, in which everything is a specialised field,’ states the Belgian choreographer Damian Jalet. ‘Which is precisely why I’d like to make use of the energy we possessed in our mother’s womb, the primeval energy of the first breath we took upon emerging.’ Jalet collaborated on Vessel with the Japanese artist Nawa Kohei. The work crystallises the research undertaken by the choreographer, who is fascinated by Celtic folklore, Shintoism, and Shugendo - , a Japanese spiritual tradition based on an ascetic life in the mountains. Vessel allows the viewer, as if under hypnosis, to penetrate to the heart of something that is still in gestation. We observe the interior of organic processes made visible by a primitive, moving mass. In this piece, in the words of Georges Bataille, each performer ‘combines birth and death in the same outburst. He is not a man. He is not a God either’.
