Head of Scenery Workshops (m/f/x)

As Head of Scenery Workshops, you are responsible for creating high-quality sets and props for the various productions and projects at La Monnaie. The workshops consist of several departments: design office, carpentry, metalworking, painting, sculpture, and upholstery — all part of the Technical & Facility Management department.

Job Description
  • You ensure that the various workshops operate efficiently with the help of their respective managers. This means you organize, allocate, and manage resources for the departments, and you lead, coach, and support the workshop managers.
  • You are responsible for the short- and long-term planning of task distribution and meeting deadlines within the workshops. Additionally, you estimate and monitor the total budget for sets per production and work closely with the technical production managers.
  • You report directly to the Technical Director and are part of La Monnaie’s middle management.
  • You organize and oversee the purchasing of materials, manage the department’s budgets, and contribute to the reuse of materials in accordance with the guidelines of the “Theatre Green Book”.
  • You inform and support the design office or external set designers regarding construction methods and materials to be used.
  • You maintain regular contact with scenographers.
  • You organize departmental meetings and participate in various meetings of the technical department (planning, production, and maquettes).
  • You ensure clear communication and collaboration with the technical management, the design office, production managers, and all other departments and individuals involved in the production process and provide advice where necessary.
  • Together with the workshop managers, you ensure that the various scenery workshops offer a safe and well-equipped working environment.
  • You work with the technical management on developing a long-term strategic development plan for the workshops and their teams.
Profile
  • You have at least 10 years of experience in a workshop and 5 years in a management role within a workshop or department.
  • You have extensive and up-to-date knowledge of general and specific stagecraft techniques in construction and machinery.
  • You have general knowledge of construction materials.
  • You are familiar with theatrical crafts such as carpentry, metalwork, painting, sculpture, and upholstery.
  • You have experience with and a strong focus on eco-design, and a genuine interest in innovation in this field.
  • You are proficient with tools and software such as MS Office, CAD, 3D printing, CNC, etc.
  • You are fluent in French and English. Knowledge of Dutch is an asset.
  • You possess strong team management skills.
  • You have excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • You have an affinity with the performing arts and a broad artistic culture.
