La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra at the Colmar Festival
On July 5th and 6th, Alain Altinoglu and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra will take part in the prestigious Colmar International Festival for two concerts.
Since 1979, the ‘Festival International de Colmar’ has brought world-class soloists and orchestras to various historical locations in the city, such as Koïfhus, l’église Saint-Matthieu, the chapelle Saint-Pierre, and the Parc des Expositions. In 2023, after a three-year hiatus, the festival got a new jumpstart with Alain Altinoglu as artistic director.
During the 2024 edition, our Music Director and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestrawill give two concerts. For the opening concert on July 5th, our musicians will perform Richard Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, Richard Strauss'sVier letzte Lieder with South African soprano Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha, and the symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustraby the same composer.
The programme for the second concert, on July 6th, will include Hector Berlioz's Le carnaval romain, Camille Saint-Saëns' First Cello Concertowith cellist Edgar Moreau, and excerpts from Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt with soprano Sofia Nesje Enger.

Next year, the non-profit association 'Mortier Awards' will present the Mortier Next Generation Award, for the fifth time. This prize, worth € 30,000, supports artistic projects of young artists in keeping with the spirit of Gerard Mortier, former La Monnaie director and great innovator of the art form opera.
