Icarus Burning

Howard Moody

Presentation
how everything turns away / Quite leisurely from the disaster.— W.H. Auden (on Bruegel's 'Icarus')

In the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels, you can find one of the most famous paintings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder: Landscape with the Fall of Icarus. In a small corner of the canvas, barely noticeable, we can see the flailing legs of the headstrong son, who abused the invention of his father Daedelus and ignored his warnings. The story is more topical than ever: those who do not handle the possibilities offered by science and technology with care, those who put their personal freedom before the forces of nature, risk bringing about their own downfall, while the world looks away uninterested … After Sindbad, Orfeo & Majnun and Push, all strong community projects carried out by and for young people, Howard Moody once again touches on a burning issue: environmental awareness and respect for nature. And who can interpret this more convincingly than the young singers of the MM Academy and of our Children’s and Youth Choirs, the generation that holds the key to changing course?
