The 'Green Opera' project: our ecological commitment

At la Monnaie, we are aware of the urgency of the climate challenge and want to ensure sustainability is part of all our institutional practices. In the 2018-19 season, we initiated the 'Green Opera' project to develop an eco-responsible production model.

We calculated all our greenhouse gas emissions. Based on the results we obtained, we drew up an action plan to make an initial reduction along two pillars:

  • Green Opera Production (our opera performances), where we aim to develop eco-design for our stage sets (building principles, materials used, recycling and reusing material), adapting business and artists' transport methods and encouraging the audience to use soft mobility.
  • Green Opera House (our general activities), where we aim to reduce the carbon impact of our energy consumption, reduce and sort our waste more, incorporate sustainable criteria in our purchasing and promote soft mobility among the staff.

In the coming years, la Monnaie will experiment with new practices for some of its productions. The results of these experiments will then be applied to all our future productions.
