“Laurent Pelly’s stark new staging of Yevgeny Onegin, which opened at La Monnaie in February, is one of colossal elegance and power.” (Opera Now)
In 2023, La Monnaie made the headlines with a new production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Yevgeny Onegin. In these celebrated ‘lyrical scenes’, the music is wholly used to articulate the feelings of the characters while the orchestra seeks to unify the musical idiom by means of compulsive themes of great subtlety. We encounter frustrated human beings, the playthings of fate, and are confronted with their fantasies and inner torments. The production, directed by Laurent Pelly, conducted by Alain Altinoglu and with Stéphane Degout and Sally Matthews in the lead roles, is now available on DVD, Blu-ray and streaming via the Naxos label.
