La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra makes its debut at the Salzburg Festival

On 29 July and 1 August 2026, the world’s most prestigious opera festival will welcome the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra and its Music Director Alain Altinoglu for two concert performances of Massenet’s Werther.
The La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra is still basking in the glow of the Best Conductor prize for La Monnaie’s Music Director Alain Altinoglu of the International Opera Awards 2025, and now La Monnnaie is excited to announce that he and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra have received a prestigious international invitation. For the very first time in the rich history of our theatre, our Music Director and the La Monnaie Symphony Orchestra have been invited to perform at the famous Salzburg Festival.

On Wednesday 29 July and Saturday 1 August 2026, Alain Altinoglu and the orchestra will present a concert performance of Jules Massenet’s Werther at the Großes Festspielhaus. They will share the stage with a star-studded cast led by Benjamin Bernheim (Werther), Marianne Crebassa (Charlotte) and Sandra Hamaoui (Sophie), joined by Andrey Zhilikhovsky, Manuel Winckhler, Tomislav Jukić, and others, as well as the Salzburger Festspiele und Theater Kinderchor.

Next year, the non-profit association 'Mortier Awards' will present the Mortier Next Generation Award, for the fifth time. This prize, worth € 30,000, supports artistic projects of young artists in keeping with the spirit of Gerard Mortier, former La Monnaie director and great innovator of the art form opera.
