Three jealous women break up the tsarina’s family. 

Of the three sisters aspiring to marry Tsar Saltan, it is the youngest, Militrissa, that wins him over with her modesty and beauty. She is soon pregnant with their first child. Green with jealousy, her two sisters devise a plot with the old Babarikha to take their revenge on her. They make Saltan, who has gone to war, believe that Militrissa has given birth to a monster. Furious, the tsar orders his wife and son to be shut up in a barrel and thrown into the sea …   

Inspired by this tale, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote one of the most dazzling scores in the repertoire. His music abounds in colourful melodies, including the inimitable ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’, and his mastery of orchestration highlights each instrument. In 2019 La Monnaie presented a deeply moving production of this opera, directed by Dmitri Tcherniakov. Beautifully animated sequences showed the imaginary world of a young boy trying to cope with his parents’ divorce. An unforgettable show that will return in December under the baton of Timur Zangiev.
